A Guide to Best Man Speeches
Being the "Best Man" isn't just an honorary title these days. More and more, groomsmen are calling upon their Best Man to help with a variety of duties. One responsibility of the Best Man, however, has remained consistent through the decades. It is his responsibility to deliver the main toast at the wedding reception. Public speaking makes some people nervous so, for many, the official Best Man toast can be a worrisome time. A few simple guidelines, however, can make Best Man speeches worry-free.
While this speech is addressed to both the bride and groom, because the Best Man is often a treasured sibling or a long-time friend of the groom, the speech will often include personal stories about him. A good way to begin to write the speech is to jot down some amusing anecdotes or special memories about the groom and try to incorporate those into the speech. Most grooms won't mind being poked fun at just a little during his wedding reception. If, however, the groom is of the serious type, try to keep the joking to a minimum and include some endearing stories instead. Most of all, it's important that the Best Man convey just how important the groom is to him. He should also take time to properly include complimentary words about the bride and end with a wish of happiness for the two of them.
We've all been to weddings where the speeches have been way too long and we've watched hungrily as the salad wilts and the servers stand patiently by with the next course. A good rule of thumb is that Best Man speeches should be no more than about 5 minutes long. While the Best Man might enjoy rambling on about every hilarious moment he's shared with the groom, others will likely be bored after a few minutes. It's also important to remember to keep the content of the speech appropriate for all audiences, including children and elderly relatives who tend to have a different idea of what should be said in public. Don't talk about drunkenness, sex, and other things that are best kept between friends. Keep the content light and fun for all.
Above all, don't try to wing it! Improvised Best Man speeches usually fall flat and include plenty of awkward pauses that make everyone uncomfortable. If you prefer not to write out the whole speech, list some prompts on note cards that fit into your tuxedo pocket. Place them in the pocket as soon as they're complete so they're not forgotten on the day of the event. Be sure not to drink too much before the speech so that you can deliver a well-spoken, cohesive message.
Remember, the Best Man Speech is often one of the most memorable parts of the wedding reception…and often captured on videotape! Anyone who's been asked to fill this important position should prepare carefully, write thoughtfully, and deliver the message from the heart. |
